What colour sporran should I wear?

Choosing the right colour for your sporran depends a great deal on your personal sense of individuality and style, ranging from Conservative on the one hand to Extrovert on the other and the kilt that you wear.

It also depends on the level of formality for that occasion, from ultra-casual outdoor hillwalking, through perhaps a gathering of the clans, to an afternoon ‘smart-casual’ wedding and on to the absolute black tie formal event.

Your sporran choice may also depend on budget. It’s not uncommon for a kilt wearer to have just one-sporran-for-all-occasions.

But the real question is What Colour? (Or COLOR, as they spell it in the USA)

In general, the first place to start would be to ask yourself the following questions……..

# What tartan will I have in my kilt?

# Will most of my events be casual or formal?

# Do I want a sporran that is purely utilitarian, or one that’s classic and discrete or perhaps something that makes a bold statement?

The tartan in your kit is generally a personal choice, even if it relates to the pipe band or Association you belong to or the district you live in or somesuch.

As a general rule try to find a sporran that COMPLIMENTS YOUR KILT and your nature (see above).  The following might apply…………

Day Sporrans: These are more casual, simple in design and may or may not have tassels, will generally be unadorned with any silverwork and are typically made from black or brown leather, but may include more exotic colours such as ‘military tan’, olive green. These are perfect for less formal events and are often paired with tweed day jackets. Some fellows prefer to wear variants of long horsehair or goat hair sporrans.

Semi-Dress Sporrans: These often include simple silverware and are therefore considered ‘smarter’ and more formal and although predominantly leather, may also feature hair-on-hide or fur. Typically, they are suitable for semi-formal occasions where an Argyle jacket and tie are worn.  This group of sporrans will possibly also include a style called ‘Hunting sporrans’, which have fixed tassels.

Dress Sporrans: These tend to have a noticeable silver cantle a tassel cones, are the most formal and are usually crafted with hair-on-hide/fur and tassels. They are perfect for formal events such as weddings and black tie events and are typically worn with a Prince Charlie or similar outfit.

Exotic sporrans.  Nothing wrong with this, as there is a wide range of antique, modern and otherwise fascinating sporrans you might choose to reflect your personal sense of taste and style.

The final decision will be made on TARTAN + TASTE/STYLE + OCCASION + BUDGET.         Enjoy the journey.
