The SABLE ANTELOPE (Hippotragus Niger) is a large and handsome creature, characterised by glossy black coats with white under parts and white facial markings. Cows and young are dark brown in colour. Both sexes have stiff black manes along the dorsal aspects of their necks. Their long scimitar-shaped curved and ribbed horns are spectacular, although shorter in the female.
The Sable antelope prefers open savannah woodlands or moist vleis (a hidden water seep), in which they select for medium height, good quality grass and sedge cover, eating at a relatively high level above the ground. Interestingly, it has been observed that they often chew on the bones of carcasses left in the veld, to counter phosphorous deficiencies in their diet.
These animals are rarely culled, so we seldom get an opportunity to purchase a beautifully hide.
